Endodontic Treatment

Root canal infection can be very painful and lead to damage to the jaw bone if left untreated

Also known as root canal therapy, endodontic treatment relieves pain caused when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This is soft tissue extending from the middle of the tooth down into the root canals. It contains blood and nerve endings and can cause a great deal of pain if infected.

Root canal infection

In most cases, infection is caused by bacteria attacking the pulp through a deep cavity in the enamel and dentine. The pulp can also become inflamed due to a fracture or heavy blow to the tooth itself.

Symptoms vary from person to person. They include, but are not limited to, sensitivity to hot and cold, sharp pain when chewing, swollen gums, abscesses on the gums, discoloured enamel, facial swelling, persistent aching (especially at night time) and a bad taste in the mouth.

The treatment process

Endodontic treatment involves the removal of infected or inflamed pulp. The cavity is cleaned and disinfected to remove the remaining bacteria before it is filled and sealed. Sometimes, a crown will be placed over the enamel for further protection.

By undergoing treatment quickly, it is possible to save the affected tooth and retain its functionality and the beauty of your smile. However, if left untreated, the infection can travel through the tooth into the jawbone, dissolving the bone as the bacteria spreads. If this occurs, extracting the tooth may be the only option.

If you are experiencing the above symptoms, contact us and arrange a consultation today. After the initial examination, which may involve x-rays and/or a pulp tester, we will create a treatment plan specific to your individual needs. The time required for therapy will vary depending on the severity of your symptoms.
